Immigration
lawyers smell profit in Wal-Mart raids
Issue 171: October 30, 2003 +== TIME-OUT PROJECT
==+
The Immigration Lawyers Weekly (ILW) has joined House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in attacking the law enforcement officers who arrested hundreds of illegal aliens last week at Wal-Mart stores around the country. Both Pelosi and the ILW used rhetoric borrowed from the war on terror to condemn the officers. Rep. Pelosi, in a statement from Mexico City, said the officers were "terrorizing workers." The ILW, in its daily update, claimed that the federal agents were aiding terrorists by diverting resources to "pursue undocumented janitors." But a Roper Poll released earlier this year shows that the law enforcement officers have the backing of the overwhelming majority of the American people -- a larger percentage, in fact, than supported the war on Iraq. The poll found that 85% of Americans consider illegal immigration to be a serious problem -- a majority believing it to be "very serious." Two thirds said the United States should actually set the goal of completely halting illegal immigration and should reduce the number of foreign nationals illegally residing in the United States to "near zero." Among that majority, four out of five respondents were willing to take very strong measures against illegal aliens, including "mandatory detention and forfeiture of property, followed by deportation." In other words, Nancy Pelosi and the immigration lawyers are in direct opposition to the will of the American people, and are radically out of step with the American mainstream.
Tancredo has sponsored H.R. 946, The Mass Immigration Reduction Act of 2003, which would provide for a temporary time-out from mass immigration. He will also soon introduce a guest worker proposal that, unlike the "guest worker" bills introduced by some of his colleagues, will not be an amnesty in disguise; it will be an actual improvement over the current situation. Norwood has introduced H.R. 2671, the bipartisan CLEAR Act of 2003, which already has 109 co-sponsors. The CLEAR Act would make it easier for the 600,000 local law enforcement officers in the country to work with federal immigration law enforcement authorities. Since polling has shown that 85% of the American public support a law requiring local law enforcement and government agencies to "apprehend and turn over illegal immigrants" they encounter, clearly Representative Norwood -- not Nancy Pelosi -- is in step with the American people. As for the immigration lawyers industry, the Wal-Mart raids have an positive aspect in that the raids may prompt employers to seek legal status for their illegal alien employees and, as the ILW notes in its October 28 update, "as is well-known, Employment-Based immigration is the bread-and-butter of most immigration law practices. ____________________________

Favor Tough Approach to Illegal Immigration (Roper Poll)
With the leader in the House of Representatives of the Democratic Party openly challenging the enforcement of U.S. laws -- from a foreign capital, no less -- things are clearly at a head. The Bush Administration simply must step in now and vigorously enforce U.S. law. It would be both popular, and the right thing to do. Democrats in Congress, meanwhile, need to sideline extremist throwbacks like Nancy Pelosi as divisive and bad for the party. Call the Democratic National Committee, ask for the public comment line, and leave a message letting the Democrats know what you think of radicals like Nancy Pelosi comparing our law enforcement community to terrorists. Don't forget to note that she attacked our law enforcement community while standing in the capital of a country, Mexico, that was one of the last to condemn the 9/11 attacks on innocent Americans by real terrorists. Democratic National
Committee: 202-863-8000
"The fact that the highest ranking Democrat in the U.S. House would equate enforcing our immigration laws with terrorism is both embarrassing and offensive. Law enforcement officials are already fighting an uphill battle protecting our borders and enforcing our laws. They do not need political opportunists like Nancy Pelosi to use the issue as a way to pander for votes." Congressman Tom Tancredo
I am a Hispanic woman with a lot of Hispanic friends from south of the border. We the legal immigrants find this Democratic fishing hole the most despicable and desperate manner for which they plan to get people here to vote for their party. The people who have struggled through the system just try and do things the right way and follow the immigration laws feel very abused by the fact that you make it easy for the illegals and spit in the face of the ones that follow the law. Mercedes Tucker
Over one thousand people have already signed a letter to John Ashcroft demanding the Federal government step in and see to it our immigration laws are being enforced. This effort is really taking off. Imagine what a statement it will make when we personally hand-deliver thousands of letters to the Justice Department! Our goal is 10,000 letters from Americans demonstrating strong support for immigration law enforcement. John Ashcroft and the Bush Administration need to hear from us, the American majority. We must drown out the anti-borders ideologues like Nancy Pelosi, her allies in Mexico City, and the selfish special interests like the immigration lawyers industry. Please, if you have not signed our letter, do so now! And if you already have signed it, thank you, and please don't forget to send the letter on to your friends and family and get them to sign it. We need an enormous outpouring of support for the rule of law. ____________________________ |
